Early Life
Billy Walters grew up in the rural Kentucky town of Munfordville, which at the time was home to just over 1,000 people. Sadly, he grew up without his father, who passed away when Walters was just 18 months old.
Soon after his father passed away, Walters’ mom left his grandmother to raise him and his two sisters. His grandmother’s house had no indoor plumbing or running water, meaning Walters came from the most humble of beginnings.
Naturally, his grandmother became the most influential figure in Walters’ life. When Walters was seven, his grandmother helped him to secure a $40 bank loan that he used to buy a power lawn mower so he could start his own lawn-mowing business.
Two years later, his grandmother helped Walters get a $90 loan that was used to get started on a paper route, giving him two sources of income from two small businesses before the age of 10.
After his grandmother died at age 13, Walters moved to Louisville, which is roughly 75 miles north of Munfordville, to live with his mom. He paid $10 a week to rent a room in his mother’s basement during his high school years.
To pay the rent and other expenses, Walters worked nights at a gas station and mornings at a bakery while in high school. Before he graduated from high school, Walters got married and welcomed a child with his first wife. However, that marriage did not last long beyond high school.
